Today we are talking about health (dah) from a different perspective.
The epoch the word ‘healthy’ is used in, because context matters.

Sometimes, the best way to move forward is to look back.

History, in all its grim and glory, serves as a timeless teacher, imparting lessons wrapped in the cloak of time. However, it's up to us to decipher these lessons, especially when it comes to our health.

Let me be your H.G.Wells chaperon and join me on a time travel filled with stories about our ancestors' health practices, the good, the bad, and the downright dangerous.

I’m betting money that for each epoch, there was some enlightened peasant or ‘quack’ whose advice was highly disregarded that could say ‘I told you so’ only after Science entered the room. Giordano Bruno knows what I’m talking about.

Our first stop is ancient Mesoamerica, home to the mighty Mayan civilization. The Mayans, known for their advancements in mathematics and astronomy, also practiced a rather strange custom for beauty and status - head shaping. This extreme form of body modification was achieved by bounding infants' heads with cloth, resulting in an elongated skull - a mark of the noble and the brave.

Our journey continues to the Age of Exploration, an era of discovery and peril. The seafarers, in their quest to explore new lands, were often struck by a deadly foe – scurvy. Their diet, devoid of fresh fruits and vegetables during long voyages, made them vulnerable to this disease. The cure, as we now know, was in the citrus fruits of the lands they sought (that’s how grog came to life). Back then was a necessity to withstand the months of sailing, today there is no excuse to drink like a pirate or avoid vitamin C in your diet.

The industrial revolution, a time of discoveries and scientific progress where chemical compounds and new materials are invented. Asbestos makes its appearance: it found its way into numerous products, from insulation to clothing. Celebrated for its heat-resistant properties, asbestos was considered a miracle material. Fast forward few decades and not only the people dealing directly with it started dying, but also their wives (for washing their clothing).

20th century, and we find the widespread use of dental amalgam fillings. These fillings consisting of a mixture of metals including mercury and became a standard in dental restoration. However mercury leads to neurological and kidney damage.

Cigarettes. Endorsed by Hollywood stars and by your doctor (Doctors used to smoke Lucky Strike apparently). It took 50 years (fifty) to connect lung cancer to smoking cigarettes.

Margarine (one molecule away from being plastic) was advertised and promoted as a cholesterol-free substitute for butter. Laden with trans fats, now proven to damage your arteries and lead to heart disease. Yum.

Fluoride in our water supply and toothpaste. It was initially introduced for dental health (I still have to justify on why I don’t want a fluoride mouth wash when I go to the dentist) and recent research suggests potential negative effects on the thyroid and neurological development in children.

Do you know about Marie Curie's glowing notebook? This woman was handling plutonium without knowing exactly what it was. She did not turn into an X-Men and today her notebook is still radioactive. She just didn’t know better.

We shifted from centuries of evolution and learning by trial and error removing the unhealthy and dangerous for the health and wellbeing of the people UNTIL people started owning products and resources, then the unhealthy, dangerous and potentially deadly became a collateral damage on the way to make profits.Talk about the elephant in the room.

These are the practices that were believed to be beneficial to get back to health. I imagine people from past generations developing PTSD about doctor checks:

Doctors used to practice bloodletting (removing "excess" blood to balance the body's "humors" and cure a variety of ailments, from fever to plague).

Trepanation: do you have a migraine? Let’s drill.

Mercury Treatment: Mercury was used in various forms to treat a range of conditions, including syphilis and constipation. One night stands were not so cool back then.

Radithor: In the early 20th century, radium was considered a health tonic (people were drinking this - radioactive drink) and "Radithor" (a product containing radium) was marketed as a cure for a variety of ailments. Not even Monster pushed it that far.

Tobacco smoke enemas: the 18th century must have been a hell of a ride.

X-Ray Shoe Fitting Machines: In the mid-20th century, shoe stores used fluoroscopes (essentially X-ray machines) to measure shoe size. Yes, it was a jungle out there.

So, what does this journey through time teach us? That what is popular or common practice is not always what's best for our health. We must question, research, and most importantly, equip ourselves with the right knowledge.

And at the time of writing this, there are still people drinking mountain dew and eating nutella. (I know you are out there).
